Homeland Development Initiative Foundation ("HDIF") aims to initiate, facilitate, and nurture sustainable development initiatives in Armenian communities. As a grassroots organization, one of HDIF’s main activities is a non-profit effort dedicated to the creation of jobs for women in the regions of Armenia by utilizing their traditional handicraft techniques and materials. Women, children and disabled Armenians in over a dozen villages and towns across the country are contributing to the growth of HDIF, creating a number of different types of products. There are hand-knitted teddy bears, following the unique pattern of a German nun who once lived in Berd. There are sewn kitchen items bearing traditional Armenian themes. There are dolls designed to follow the traditional Armenian costumes of various regions of Western Armenia. There are tiny crocheted animals, sewn iPad cases, knitted sweaters, beautiful embroidery, and more!
